FISH CATCHING TRAVEL

Knockin Tail Lures by My Coast Outdoors

I had a free day and it turned out great.  Caught fish, had a cool hike, watched sheep and elk and just generally enjoyed all the mountains have to offer.  No real reason for big commentary, the pictures speak for themselves.

My hike today.  And since it is close to another band of sheep stopped in on them today.

All I can say about this is I love Bighorn sheep.

Momma is giving me the hairy eyeball.

Been a while since I have seen elk.  No matter how far away as you can see I am busted.

Even the ducks were looking cool.

This what a grown man did all day, and how could it be any better!

(Here is the fishing stuff I wrote yesterday.)  It has been a little busy with construction but the weather is holding until tomorrow evening so hopefully some concrete will get poured.  Not sure if we can beat the current weather but once poured the hammering can begin.  But it has not stopped me from fishing a little.

The good ones are on the chew.

Yesterday I tried a small creek I have wanted to fish for a while.  It is definitely fly rod water so I decided to give it a go.  Much of it is in a big canyon but there is a closed campground that has good access so that is where I fished.  Unfortunately it was high and moving, which is out of my skill set at the current time.

The water fell some and it will be time to do some fly fishing soon.

It has small brook trout but being so small I was unsure with the ice just going out whether they were that far up or still wintering down river waiting for the water.  But after an hour without a bite time to head to the Rio Grande and smack on the browns.

That is a solid Rio Grande brown trout.

I have not fly fished it yet because it has been to much fun catching them on small minnow baits.  I pinch the barbs down making them easy to get off and try not to take them out of the water.  The fish are quite a bit bigger than I have caught on the river in the past, though most of my experience is in late fall.

They are in their usual haunts and making the right cast gets bit.  And using a light action rod with 4lb fluro I can toss it most of the way across the river.  It seems they either hit right when it is reeled past the big rock, small shoot, or whatever else looks good.  One trick that has produced is not reeling it to fast so that it sweeps down river and then letting it wiggle with the current.  Some slam it, others just get on, but either way the fishing is good.

This is just an example of what I am catching right now..

They will still eat the jig but it has been fun to figure out how to catch them consistently on the minnow bait.  The best color has been a shallow running Rapala in brown trout and about half of them smoke it.  But as fun as that has been I am waiting for the road to open which tracks the fishing area and allows for easy in and out to multiple wades.

The next few days will be garage, and if the weather holds a little framing on the structure will start.  A project I will be glad to have off my plate.  Cuts into the fun stuff.  But no complaints on my part, it is all good.  So keep stopping in and thanks for reading my stuff.
