FISH CATCHING TRAVEL

I am still beat from the trip and here it is 8:30 Thursday morning and I have not headed to the lake yet.  Feel like staying home and resting another day but it is cloudy and looking awfully bassy.  And with the forecast for the next 4 days being some serious rain time to get off my old butt and head to the water.  It has been a month so we shall see.

Weather

73/89.  Considerable cloudiness with a 60% chance of a couple of showers and a thunderstorm; humid.  Wind  ESE  8 – 13mph.  (I call BS on the considerable cloudiness.)

Lake Level

Today  97.59 msl.  One month ago  95.99 msl.   (Until I see it I will reserve judgement on these numbers.)

Solunar Time

Major  8:34 am to 10:34 am.   (Guess I better get going.)

Poor Planning equals Poor Performance.

Well that was interesting.  If you read between the lines above you can tell I was not really feeling it.  Then when I got to the lake, no camera and no phone.  Never even crossed my mind.  But not really necessary if you think about it, fished for 30 years without them.  But to add misery to the mix it was completely cleared off and dead calm when I put in.

There is obviously a tournament this weekend because the bass boys were out and of course the usual crappie fishermen.  The lake was dead calm, the water temp ranged from 84 to 88 as the morning wore on and the color is marginal, but not that big a deal.  And there is plenty of stuff in the water which had my hopes up.

Over the next couple of hours it was slow at best.  Caught a midget on the spoon and Knockin Tail, but missed 3.  So maybe it is the bait, so next up the buzzbait, and that went worse, missed 4.  You could tell they were not interested, the wind not blowing a lick and it was hot and humid as hell.  Stopped at one of my deeper worm places and caught 2 smalls and lost 1 on the watermelon stick worm, rigged Texas style.  I threw the swim jig on one bank and did not have a bite.

At this point I had done about half of what I wanted so since the Boss was wanting some fish I trolled the catfish area.  Even that was slow but did get her a nice one for Saturday.  2 small white bass and 2 small bass also jumped on, but they weren’t much.  Things have changed but today I totally blame on the conditions, and my being lazy.  It would have definitely been better if I had been there at daylight.

Since I was not around not sure if the water color is due to the raise, or whether the lake has just turned over, (Unlikely.)  or whether this is the color it will be.  The loss of the grass sure has led to an overall deterioration of the water color.  But it is what it is, and if fall would ever get here it can only improve.

Speaking of fall it was downright Texas hot and humid minus any wind.  Sure did not miss that the last month.  There were spotty clouds but it did not stay clouded over for more than a couple of minutes, then back to mile high sky and dead calm.  It is almost October and it is just time to cool off.  Plus, starting to thinking about the rivers and creek.  That is just a month away, the sooner we get some real cold fronts the sooner that bite will start.

One thing I thought about when I was in Colorado was the high price of gas.  At almost $4 a gallon it raised the cost of filling the truck by at least $15.  That does not bode well for the future.  So here is my projection for the future of boating.  Times they are a changing for the oil and gas industry and fossil fuels.  Gas is never going to be cheaper, which is my guess, and with it will come high prices in an effort to reduce the use of gas.  Now I could be wrong, and will probably be long gone when this happens, but here it is.  When that happens it will take $100 more to fill the tank, much less the truck to get to the water.  Who will be the last guy with a 300 or 400 hp that he can not give away?  So enjoy it now, the winds of change are blowing.

This weekend will be some football.  The Razorbacks have a big test against Georgia, it is going to be tough but they have proven they have a lot of heart and used that to beat the pants of Texas and A&M.  And then Sunday the Cowboys, who are looking good, have the undefeated Carolina Panthers.  So let the games begin.

The Boss is off all next week so no specific plans for the week, but it will involve the boat and some water no matter what.  All I ask is for fall to get here.  The weather dude is not being all that helpful with the forecast to be in the high 80’s.  So keep stopping in and thanks for reading my stuff.
