A Short Friday Coleto Trip

Been out of town a couple of days on an impromptu trip so did not get this quick report up.  When you are having to much fun it is a little hard to keep up.  There is one comment I do have to make on travel.  I really like Grand Isle, La and fishing in Florida.  Currently thinking about a big trip this fall to both places on the same trip, and then I drive through Houston today.  What a mess, rarely do we make it all the way to Louisiana without some kind of delay, and this time was no different.  Besides construction there was a big semi wreck, that is the fourth we have seen wrecked lately, and it turned into an hour delay.  Thinking about the drive, which is probably a total of 18 hours, the only thing that worries me is making it through Houston with my life and the boat intact.  At least there is something to be said, it is still better than Austin.  But back to the reason we are here.

Weather

78/100  (Heat Index 109)  Partly cloudy and very warm, breezy in afternoon 10% chance of a shower.  Wind S 15 – 25 mph.

Lake Level

Today  96.61 msl.   Wednesday  96.66 msl.

Solunar Times

Major 8:50 am to 10:50 am.

When I got to the ramp before daylight guess I did not get the memo.  There were 6 boats in various stages of unloading.  Some bass fishermen and some crappie, guess everyone had the same idea.  So I dropped in and decided to head to the cove where the fish were breaking the other day and there was already a boat there.  Dang it, I wanted to hit them up at daylight.  So up the lake I went.

To make a long story short it was a lot slower.  Not a bite on the Whopper Plopper, missed one on a Bang O Lure, and caught 7, all amazingly small, on plastics.  No pictures of that. There was no rhyme or reason to where I got bites other than wood.  And not a bite after 9:00 when I headed down lake to try a couple of places.  Probably should have stayed up lake, the water color is a little darker and there is quite a bit of wood cover.

By 11:00 it was getting  hot, 94 when I pulled the boat out, and the truck was in the shade.  And the forecast was right on, the wind picked up quite a bit and either the fish really quit biting or I made poor bank selections, which is highly possible.  One interesting note, it rained on me for 2 minutes.  It was literally raining on an area about the size of my yard. While it was slow, that is not all out of line with summer on the lake.

And How About the Solunar Tables?

Spoke with Mr. Crappie on the lake the Friday and of course he is still catching them.  He probably knows more about crappie on Coleto than any man alive.  What was interesting he caught 32 on Wednesday, the same day I caught 18 bass, but Friday only 13, and I only caught 7 bass.  Maybe a comment on how active they were today.  But to the rest of the wildlife I saw the biggest flock of turkeys I have ever seen, a nice heavy 10 point buck, and then a whole wad of deer.  So stuff was moving around, just not the fish.  It seems like over the years just because it is the major period does not mean you are going to catch them.  But many of my memorable catches came during the major.  So what does all that mean?  Who the hell knows!

Get Your New Fishing License

There are several rule changes for bass on lots of lakes in Texas, along with a change in the rule on kings in saltwater.  Here is a quick link to the TWPD with the changes that will take effect on Sept. 1.  And remember to buy your new license for the year, sale begins on the 15th.   After my last experience at Academy think I will just hit up the local TPWD office to get mine.  Before you leave, no matter where you buy it, look at it and be sure it is right just in case.

And last, use your kills switch, it is going to be the law.  It has to become habit.  Save yourself a potential ticket, and maybe a life.

The heat wave is still ongoing here in Texas.  The car said it was a 100 both going and coming.  100 at noon in Houston is freakin’ hot and the car said 100 when we got home.  Next up it is Fayette in the morning with my buddy Aaron.  He hollered at me today itching to try a couple of other places to see if we can find some bigger fish Fayette has to offer. One thing about Fayette, we will catch some nice fish, at least that is the plan.  Who knows, might even be a few for the camera.  So time to get ready for that dreaded early morning start.   Keep stopping in and thanks for reading my stuff.
